Pan Pacific Solutions

The New Year brings a reorganization of my firm. Reflecting what clients want and what I most love in work, “Pan Pacific Law Corporation” has become “Pan Pacific Solutions Limited”, still “Jia He” (“excellent peace”) in Chinese. PPS will deliver TTM and professional guidance to clients in areas of strategic advice, government relations, and media/communications strategy. Operating as a consultant rather than a lawyer allows me to focus my experience in international relations, law, government, diplomacy, and communications. I can perform more nimbly and cost-effectively in the new set-up, which brings together my passion for professional excellence and public service.

Pan Pacific Law Corporation

Pan Pacific Law Corporation helped clients navigate legal systems, at home and abroad.  In areas of Strategic Advice, Government Relations, and Constitutional Affairs, clients benefited from teams of people assembled by John Weston. His guiding hand reflected his extensive legal experience, training, and exposure to Canadian and international governments, businesses and diversified communities. These skills and the teams we assembled ensured clients received world-class legal and consulting advice.

Government Relations and Community Engagement

Individuals, companies, and non-profit enterprises rely on our broad experience in dealing with foreign governments and domestic ones - local, provincial, and federal governments, and First Nations.

We are  involved in helping clients resolve conflicts that unfold in two or more countries, sometimes under two or more legal systems and in two or more languages.

One of our specific areas of expertise is in assisting families or groups to win justice and fair treatment for loved ones incarcerated overseas.  Our work in this area has involved governments in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and The Mideast.  Mr. Weston’s article Getting Out of Foreign Jails has been circulated widely.

Examples of our work include:

  • Setting a strategy to deal with a foreign government or other related organization to ensure the safety, fair treatment, and release of persons incarcerated in foreign countries;
  • Assisting professionals to deal with their professional associations;
  •  Assisting people to assess their eligibility for public office;
  • Working with non-profit organizations in strategy planning, with a focus on achieving best outcomes from government;
  • Coordinating the media and communications strategies to reinforce a government relations or public relations campaign;
  • Developing the fundraising strategy to support aspects of a legal strategy or government relations campaign.

Communications is key to your success in working your way through any high-stakes problem.  Sometimes the best strategy is… silence.  But even silence has to be well considered and properly packaged.

Indigenous Affairs and Community Engagement

Pan Pacific’s values - Compassion, Integrity, and Empowerment - ensure a long-term perspective in negotiations, strategic analysis, and community engagement.  We tend to discourage short-term victories which come at the expense of long-term success, peace, order, or good government.

Our work typically involves cases where the fast-changing world of Indigenous law has created uncertainty in governance issues, land ownership, constitutional rights, or other matters.

Mr. Weston’s skills in Indigenous and Constitutional Law were initially forged in his work for the Provinces of BC and Quebec when Canada took control over its own Constitution from the Parliament of the United Kingdom. In acting as Legal Counsel for Nisga’a elders in a high-profile constitutional case, he was given the Nisga’a name Ama Dax Gadum Algahum Skag (“Talking Eagle”).

Mr. Weston’s expertise in Indigenous Affairs also reflects his experience as Member of Parliament. He served on the Caucus Advisory Committee to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs. Among his constituents were the members of three First Nations.

Community Service

Community Service

Much of what we achieve privately for our clients results from what we invest publicly in community service. In addition to his past work as a Member of Parliament, Mr. Weston is a Founding Director of the Canadian Health and Fitness Institute and the National Health and Fitness Foundation; a founder of the Canadian Constitution Foundation; and an author and public speaker.

“As a lawyer myself , I have been on both sides of the solicitor-client equation. I have been on the Management Committee of a Major Law Firm and a client, as Managing Partner of one of Western Canada’s leading Private Equity Funds. I believe clients want a determined, highly skilled professional advocate with well educated mind.

Having seen John in action as my Member of Parliament, I know clients will get the benefit of these qualities with him.”

I first met John around 1999. He came into my life firstly as a lawyer who represented us in the British Columbia courts with the “Chief Mountain Challenge” to provisions of the Nisga’a Treaty.

I liked John right away and he soon became a trusted friend. In early 2000 the Chief Mountain Wilp (Tribal House) adopted John as an honorary member of our Tribal Wilp. John’s Tribal House name is “Ama Dax Gadum Algahum Skag” - “Talking Eagle”.

"John consistently worked hard to learn the needs of our community, made himself readily available, and nimbly drew together governmental and non-governmental groups to create common ground. He made it clear that a client would be fortunate to have John on the team.”

"John Weston was a leading champion for the Pacific Salmon Foundation during his time as a Member of Parliament. He was an effective go-to person in Ottawa for us when we needed to raise Pacific salmon issues with the government. We were able to demonstrably strengthen our relationships in the House of Commons and expand our partnerships with the government thanks to John. He possesses a great combination of strategic thinking, personal affability and “can do” spirit that make working with him a pleasure.”

"John provided myself and my family with calm and strategic guidance during our most traumatic time. When our emergency arose nobody knew how to help us, until I was put in touch with John. He provided timely responses in our high-stakes situation and gave us culturally appropriate advice. John was willing to support us as needed without being limited by time zones or language. I had a front-row seat to observe John in action which was both educational and comforting. I am extremely grateful that we had someone knowledgeable and experienced to guide us through this complicated and stressful time."
